Myths and truths about oily skin

Myths and truths about oily skin

I have oily skin, it shines, I get pimples, I've tried everything and I don't know how to take care of it.

This is one of the most frequent queries I receive.

Oily skin is skin with a greasy appearance, it presents shine, blackheads, pimples and other imperfections typical of this type of skin, it is due to an excess in the production of sebum.

What is sebum?

Sebum is a lipid material produced by the sebaceous glands present in our skin, this sebum is excreted in the hair follicles. the activity of the sebaceous glands is fundamentally controlled by hormonal stimuli.

Androgen hormones stimulate the activity of the sebaceous glands, increasing their size which translates into an increase in sebum production and consequently giving rise to oily skin.

Estrogens and vitamin A derivatives will give rise to the opposite effect, they will decrease their activity.

Sebum is made up of triglycerides, fatty acids, unsaponifiable compounds, lipids, mostly cholesterol. It constitutes the lipid film that covers the surface of the skin, its most important function is to prevent the loss of water from the skin surface, it has been shown to have bactericidal and fungicidal activity and is responsible for body odour.

And its negative side is that sebum is the breeding ground for acne.

Accepted the idea that the production of sebum is regulated by the hormonal system, it must be very clear to us that to control this type of skin when there is a severe production or acne vulgaris, it is necessary to resort to hormonal treatments, this step only your dermatologist is able to advise you about it, nothing about the pills that your friend or your neighbor takes. medical treatments to control acne are very serious and you have to go only to the dermatologist I insist.

Assuming that the activity of the sebaceous glands is controlled by the hormonal system, it must be very clear to us that it will not be possible to act at this level, except with hormonal treatments and for this purpose, it is necessary to go solely and exclusively to your dermatologist (this would be the case of people suffering from acne vulgaris or excessive sebum production) and with a change in eating habits.

How can we help you from Biovardi?

When faced with oily skin, the most important thing is to choose very well the cosmetic products that you are going to use, that are indicated for oily skin, that do not contain irritating substances, that do not dehydrate the skin, that do not dry it out and that do not cause inflammation of the skin. same.

What is sought are products that help improve the appearance of oily skin, limit imperfections such as pimples and blackheads, reduce shine and oily appearance.

I'm going to pause to explain what blackheads are:

The sebum produced by the sebaceous glands is excreted in the sebaceous follicle and from there it reaches the surface of the skin to perform its functions. There are situations where this follicle is clogged, which prevents sebum from leaving, and comedones or also called whiteheads may appear, giving the skin a grainy appearance. On the other hand, open comedones may appear where sebum accumulates, and due to the presence of the melanin will have a black color in the center and they are the famous blackheads.

Summary Blackheads are accumulations of sebum that do not manage to exit through the follicular canal and, due to the effect of melanin, have that black color in the center.

How should I take care of my oily skin?

step 1

I will tell you what I tell my clients, the most important thing is a good facial cleansing, facial cleansing is paramount when it comes to taking care of oily skin, you have to choose appropriate cleansers for this type of skin, which are not only to clean but to regulate sebum, reduce shine, clean pores, soothe the skin and regenerate it.

Running away from products that promise to completely eliminate sebum will end up with dry and dehydrated skin, where inflammation and discomfort begin and you can end up with a rebound effect, that is, increased sebum production.

My favorite products that have proven effective in cleaning oily skin are:

- EVOLVE ORGANIC BEAUTY DETOX FACIAL CLEANSER 100ML:

Cleanses, detoxifies and balances the skin

It has a mild exfoliating effect.

- JANE APOTHECARY SOOTHING CLEANSING BALM

STEP 2

After cleaning we go to the next step,

Apply the treatment that will be in the form of a serum, choose the most suitable for you and base it on what you are most concerned about correcting.

The ones that have shown the best results are:

- S5 SKINCARE PURITY SERUM

Reduces imperfections, balances sebum production and minimizes pores.

acts to prevent inflammation, irritation .

- EVOLVE ORGANIC BEAUTY SERUM RAINFOREST RESCUE

Natural and powerful treatment for combination and oily skin, regulates sebum production, relieves skin congestion, visibly improves the imperfections of combination and oily skin.

The skin is more luminous, clear, and protected from future outbreaks of pimples that nobody wants.

- BEARBERRY BALANCING SERUM

Helps reduce breakouts. Lighten dark spots. Regulates sebum production to prevent unwanted shine on the skin.

Step 3

After applying the serum, it is time to hydrate with a moisturizing cream, choosing more fluid formulas that provide hydration to the skin without adding more fat.

At this stage I always recommend using the cream from the same line as the serum or if you prefer another from another brand, it doesn't matter, but you do have to keep in mind what we are looking for in the cream, that it be moisturizing, anti-spot, antioxidant, regulator....etc.

And always indicated for oily skin.

Tips:

It is very important in the case of oily skin to exfoliate the skin of the face twice a week, to cleanse the pores more deeply.

Applying serum with glycolic acid would help improve the appearance of the typical imperfections of oily skin.

Serum with vitamin C to protect the skin from oxidation caused by pollution and UV rays.

Summary

When it comes to taking care of oily skin there are no miracles, the best thing you can do for it is to have 3 basic products, a good cleanser, a good serum and a good moisturizer. without forgetting a good exfoliant.

Choose your cosmetics according to your needs, you do not need 200 thousand products to take care of your skin, there is no cream in the world that changes the functioning of the sebaceous glands since it is controlled by the hormonal system and if not, you are already recommending it to me:)

Faced with very problematic oily skin and acne, it is best to visit your dermatologist, he is the only skin professional who will know how to guide you towards pharmacological treatments.

And please do not prepare your cosmetics in the kitchen or home recipes are simply not hygienic and I doubt they will work.

Don't forget to take care of your diet.
